Big Dog Steel SR500 Target Guidelines
Recommended Minimum Distances
Pistols: Rimfire & standard pistol calibers up to .45 ACP: 25 yards | Magnum handguns: 50-100 yards
Shotguns: Birdshot: 25 yards | Buckshot: 50 yards | Slugs: 100 yards
Rifles: Standard rifles up to .308 class: 100 yards | Magnum rifles: 200–300 yards | .50 BMG on 1/2″ SR500: 500 yards minimum
Velocity Recommendations
Keep impact velocity below 2,850 FPS and impact energy below 3,500 ft-lbs for maximum target life. Higher velocities and energies will significantly increase target wear.
Ammunition Restrictions
Do NOT use armor piercing (AP), steel core, penetrator, green tip/M855/SS109, bi-metal, tracer, or incendiary ammunition. Lead core FMJ, match, and expanding bullets are recommended.
Recommended SR500 Thickness
1/4″ SR500: Rimfire and pistol calibers only — no centerfire rifles
3/8″ SR500: Standard centerfire rifle calibers
1/2″ SR500: Magnum rifles, heavy-use applications, and .50 BMG at proper distances
Safety Notes
Never shoot damaged, cratered, or bowed targets. Always wear eye and ear protection. Mount targets to allow movement and direct splatter downward. Steel targets are consumable products and will wear over time depending on use.
