AR500 Targets

Recommended Shooting Distance – Pistol calibers up to 45acp – 20 yards. Standard rifles, shotgun slugs and magnum caliber pistols – 308 class rifles no closer than 100 yards, magnum calibers 300 yards. For 1/2” and thicker AR500, 50BMG class rifles no closer than 500 yards. Keep the impact velocity below 2,850 fps and the impact energy below 3,500ft/lbs at the target for maximum target life.  Most ballistic software will provide this information and there are hundreds of online calculators like – For example the free one on the Hornady website, will provide all the info you need to figure out this calculation.  Do not use Armor piercing or incendiary bullets. The use of solid copper, bonded and other non expanding bullets will severely decrease target life.  Do not use Green tip, XM-193, or any other Bi-Metal bullet on Steel.  Never shoot damaged, cupped or bowed steel with pistols.

Steel Thickness

We typically supply targets in (3) Thicknesses; 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ Thick AR500.  We do not typically stock AR400.  We recommend 1/4″ AR500 for standard pistol calibers and rimfire targets.  We recommend 3/8″ AR500 for standard rifles.  We recommend 1/2″ AR500 for Magnum caliber rifles.  Never use centerfire rifle ammo on 1/4″ targets.  Keep velocity at the target below 2,850fps, back up or use a heavier projectile to achieve this velocity if needed.
